Common questions
Do I have to declare my Vinted / eBay / Etsy income?
If your gross sales (not profit) exceed £1,000 in a tax year, yes — you need to register for Self Assessment. Selling personal items you no longer want is generally exempt, but anything you bought or made specifically to sell counts as trading income. From 2024, platforms like Vinted, eBay, Airbnb and Uber report seller earnings to HMRC directly.
What's the £1,000 trading allowance?
The first £1,000 of gross trading or property income each tax year is tax-free. If your gross side income is under £1,000, you don't need to declare it or register for Self Assessment. Above £1,000, you can either deduct the £1,000 allowance OR your actual expenses — whichever is more generous.
When do I have to register with HMRC?
By 5 October following the end of the tax year you crossed the £1,000 threshold. So if you started trading in May 2026, you must register by 5 October 2027. Miss it and the penalty starts at £100 — and that's before any unpaid-tax penalties.
Can I claim a phone, laptop or home office?
Yes, but only the business-use portion. If you use your phone 30% for the side hustle and 70% personally, claim 30% of the bill. For home office, HMRC allows a flat rate (£10–£26/month based on hours worked) without needing detailed bills. You can also claim 45p/mile (first 10,000 business miles) or 25p/mile thereafter.
What about Class 2 and Class 4 National Insurance?
Class 2 NI is now mostly voluntary (you can pay it to keep state pension qualifying years if your profit is under £6,725). Class 4 NI is mandatory above £12,570 of profit — 6% to £50,270 and 2% above. Both are paid through Self Assessment.
