The Consumer Rights Act 2015 is the foundation of UK consumer protection law. Whether you're buying a coffee machine or a car, this law makes sure you get what you pay for.

The Three Core Rights

When you buy goods, they must be:

  1. Of satisfactory quality - Not faulty or damaged
  2. Fit for purpose - Work as expected and as described
  3. As described - Match any description given

Your Refund Rights Timeline

First 30 Days: Short-Term Right to Reject

You can return faulty goods for a full refund within 30 days. No questions asked (well, you do need to explain what's wrong with it).

30 Days to 6 Months: Repair or Replace First

After 30 days, you have to give the retailer one chance to repair or replace. If that doesn't work, you can demand a refund.

6 Months to 6 Years: Prove the Fault

After 6 months, you need to prove the fault existed when you bought the item. This usually means getting an expert report.

Digital Content Rights

The Act also covers digital content:

  • Apps and software must work as described
  • Updates shouldn't break functionality
  • You can get repairs, replacements, or refunds

Services Rights

Services must be:

  • Performed with reasonable care and skill
  • Completed in reasonable time (if not agreed)
  • Charged reasonably (if price not fixed)

How to Use Your Rights

  1. Contact the retailer (not the manufacturer)
  2. State which right applies
  3. Give them a reasonable deadline
  4. Escalate if they refuse

Remember: These are your statutory rights. Shops cannot take them away, no matter what their returns policy says.
