Common questions
Who is eligible for Marriage Allowance?
You must be married or in a civil partnership. One partner needs to earn less than £12,570 (the personal allowance) and the other must be a basic-rate taxpayer (earning between £12,571 and £50,270).
Can I backdate my claim?
Yes. You can backdate Marriage Allowance claims by up to 4 tax years. A first-time claim for the current year plus 4 backdated years could be worth up to £1,252.
What if my circumstances change?
If the lower earner starts earning more than £12,570, or the higher earner moves above the basic-rate threshold, you should cancel the transfer. HMRC will adjust automatically at year end.
How to claim
- Go to GOV.UK Marriage Allowance page
- The lower earner applies to transfer
- You'll need both National Insurance numbers
- Takes about 10 minutes online
