Common questions
Can I really lower my phone bill just by asking?
Yes. Providers keep their best deals for people threatening to leave. Their retentions teams have discounts frontline staff can't see. If you're out of contract, especially on a plan that once included a handset, you're often paying for a phone you already own, and a call can knock 30 to 50% off.
What is a PAC code and how do I get one?
A PAC (Porting Authorisation Code) lets you keep your number when you switch. Text 'PAC' to 65075 and your provider must send it within a working day, free. Asking for one is the single strongest signal that you're serious, and it often triggers a better offer within 24 to 48 hours.
Can my provider raise my price mid-contract?
Since 17 January 2025, Ofcom bans inflation-linked (CPI or RPI plus a percentage) mid-contract rises on new contracts. Any increase must be set out in pounds and pence when you sign up. If your provider raised your price in a way that wasn't made clear at the start, you may be able to leave penalty-free.
Should I wait until my contract ends?
If you're mid-term with a bundled handset, your leverage is limited until the minimum term is up. Note the exact end date, ask for a small perk now, then haggle hard the moment it ends. If you're already out of contract, do it today.
Provider won't play ball?
If they've slapped you with an unfair price rise or gone quiet, generate a formal complaint letter citing Ofcom's rules.
