British Gas ombudsman & regulator routes

Which ombudsman handles British Gas complaints?

Energy Ombudsman. Once British Gas’s own complaints process is exhausted (after 8 weeks or a deadlock letter), you can take your complaint there for free. Go to the ombudsman. Read our guide to the Energy Ombudsman.

Can you complain to Ofgem about British Gas?

Not for individual disputes: Ofgem sets the rules for the sector but does not resolve personal complaints or award compensation. Complain to British Gas directly first and keep written records, then escalate to the Energy Ombudsman if it stays unresolved after 8 weeks or you receive a deadlock or final-response letter. You can still report British Gas to Ofgem to flag systemic problems, but that will not get your own money back.

Tips for British Gas complaints

  • Ofgem will not take your case. It says so on its own complaints page: “We do not have a direct role in investigating or resolving customer complaints.” Reporting British Gas there flags a pattern for the regulator, it does not get your money back.
  • The Energy Ombudsman is the one that decides, and it is free. British Gas prints the details itself: 0330 440 1624, enquiry@energyombudsman.org, or Energy Ombudsman, P.O. Box 966, Warrington WA4 9DF.
  • British Gas publishes no complaints email. Its “We’re listening” leaflet names four routes only: live chat, 0330 808 3880, the online form at britishgas.co.uk/complaints, and post to Customer Care Team, PO Box 226, Rotherham S98 1PB. Any customercomplaints@britishgas.co.uk address on a directory site is invented.
  • Eight weeks is the wait, or sooner if a deadlock letter arrives. The Energy Ombudsman then gives you 12 months from receiving that letter to escalate, so a final response you disagree with is a clock starting, not a full stop.
  • HomeCare is not energy. British Gas’s home services leaflet sends boiler, plumbing and electrical cover complaints to the Financial Ombudsman Service instead, within six months of its final decision. Send one of those to the Energy Ombudsman and it will be turned away.
  • Switched by mistake, or a switch that took more than 5 working days? Ofgem’s guaranteed standards mean you are owed £40 automatically, paid within 10 working days, and a further £40 if British Gas misses that deadline.
  • Smart meter waits carry a payment too. Since February 2026 you get £40 if you wait more than 6 weeks for an installation appointment, if the appointment fails through the supplier’s fault, or if you report a fault and get no resolution plan within 5 working days.

Frequently asked questions

The Energy Ombudsman, for anything to do with your gas or electricity supply. British Gas names it in its own complaints leaflet, along with the contact details: 0330 440 1624, enquiry@energyombudsman.org, or Energy Ombudsman, P.O. Box 966, Warrington WA4 9DF. Its service is free, and once you accept a decision British Gas has 28 days to carry it out. HomeCare is the exception and goes to the Financial Ombudsman Service instead.

0330 440 1624. That is the Energy Ombudsman, not British Gas, and it is open Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm. Calls to 03 numbers cost no more than a call to an 01 or 02 number and usually come out of inclusive minutes. You can also email enquiry@energyombudsman.org or write to Energy Ombudsman, P.O. Box 966, Warrington WA4 9DF.

Both, for different jobs. Ofgem regulates the market and states plainly that it has no direct role in investigating or resolving customer complaints, so reporting British Gas there helps it spot a pattern but will not resolve your case. The Energy Ombudsman is the one that can order British Gas to fix, apologise or pay, once 8 weeks have passed or you hold a deadlock letter.

Eight weeks to reach a solution, and its own leaflet says it aims to reply within two working days of a written or online complaint. Ask for it to be escalated and a complaints manager should come back to you within two working days. Once 8 weeks have passed without a fix, or a deadlock letter arrives sooner, the Energy Ombudsman will take it.

Sometimes automatically, under Ofgem’s guaranteed standards. A switch that took more than 5 working days or an erroneous transfer is worth £40, paid within 10 working days, and another £40 if that deadline is missed. Since February 2026 a smart meter appointment more than 6 weeks away, an appointment that fails through the supplier’s fault, or a reported fault with no resolution plan inside 5 working days each carry £40 too. Anything beyond that comes from the Energy Ombudsman, where the most common award is around £50.

The Financial Ombudsman Service, not the Energy Ombudsman. British Gas’s home services complaints leaflet routes boiler, plumbing, drains and electrical cover that way because British Gas Services Limited is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. Complain to British Gas first on 0333 202 9832 or in writing to Services Customer Relations, PO Box 699, Winchester SO23 5AR, then go to the Financial Ombudsman within six months of its final decision. That service is free.

We haven't found a complaints email address that British Gas publishes itself, so start from the complaints route on British Gas' own site: https://www.britishgas.co.uk/complaints.html. Put "Formal complaint" at the top, with your account or order number, what went wrong, and the outcome you want. Keep a copy of what you send, or a note of the call with the date, so you have a paper trail. If British Gas hasn't sorted it within 8 weeks, you can escalate free to the Energy Ombudsman.

British Gas complaints can be escalated to the Energy Ombudsman, free of charge, after 8 weeks or a deadlock letter. Complain to British Gas directly first: the ombudsman only takes your case once the company has had a chance to fix it, and its decision is binding on British Gas.

Not for an individual dispute: Ofgem regulates the industry but doesn't resolve personal complaints. Your route is to complain to British Gas in writing, then escalate to the Energy Ombudsman for a free, binding decision. You can still report British Gas to Ofgem to flag systemic problems.
