Student loan refund tool — check if you've overpaid
New free tool: find out if you've overpaid your student loan and how to request a refund. Thousands of graduates are owed money and don't know it.
We've launched a Student Loan Refund Checker at /tools/student-loan-refund.
The problem
The Student Loans Company processes millions of repayments — and they get some wrong. Common reasons you might have overpaid:
- You earned below the repayment threshold for some of the year but your employer still deducted payments
- You repaid after your loan was cleared (it can take months for the SLC to notify your employer to stop deductions)
- Your loan was subject to a statutory interest error
- You had a break in employment but deductions continued
What the tool does
It walks you through a short set of questions about your loan, employment history, and repayment record. If it spots a likely overpayment, it tells you exactly what to do next — including the letter to send to the SLC.
How big a refund could you get?
It depends entirely on your situation. Some people find they're owed a few hundred pounds. Others have found errors worth several thousand.
